Aim:
To link Viking History and a topic on strength of materials and making
things stronger.
Planning:
Visit set up after several telephone sessions to determine content,
location of work bases, level of adult support, maps & directions, equipment
required, costs etc.
Personnel:
Two Costumed VIKINGS
Two
classes of 40 children from year 3 aged about eight
Four teachers plus four parents.
Morning session two groups each in a classroom
Afternoon session all together in school hall.

Two groups
1)
Video of Battle of Maldon followed by trying on Viking Costume etc.
2)
Talk on life and times linked to making things strong, sails on ships, spinning
and weaving, metal casting, wire making. Each session about three quarters of an
hour groups changing over at playtime
1)
Casting molten chocolate jewellery
2)
Pattern welded knives from tin foil and coloured paper
3)
Repouce tin foil brooches
4)
Cord making with circular weaving cards
5)
Weaving with stick looms and flat card looms
6)
Coloured beads using FIMO
7)
Helmet and Moesgard masks from paper and card.
8)
Rings and brooches from soft wire.
9)
Spare base. finger and
spindle spinning.
To take up children either two quick or having difficulty at other bases.
